What is infrared therapy?
Infrared therapy is a type of treatment that uses infrared light to promote healing in the body. Infrared light is not a form of the visible light spectrum, but we feel it as heat because the energy emitted from infrared light stimulates the water in our bodies to generate energy, which is what you feel as warmth. While infrared radiation does not emit visible light, it is a part of what is called the electromagnetic spectrum.
How does infrared light work?
Infrared therapy works from infrared waves that have emitted infrared radiation, called infrared light, being absorbed by the body and converted to thermal energy. Infrared light passes through your skin and into fat cells, breaking down the triglycerides into fatty acids and glycerol. This process is called lipolysis, and it allows your body to rid itself of toxins stored in fat cells. As well as the above health benefits of infrared wavelengths, infrared therapy also works by raising your core temperature. This rise in core temperature in turn causes your heart rate to increase and your blood vessels to dilate. This increase in blood flow and improved circulation allows for greater oxygen and nutrient delivery, improved blood pressure, and stimulates the body's natural defences for even more health benefits.
What is the difference between an infrared and traditional sauna?
Infrared saunas are different to traditional saunas in that they raise the body temperature directly, rather than heating the air. Traditional saunas can be uncomfortable and difficult to breathe in due to temperatures reaching upwards of 80°C-105°C, while infrared sauna cabins have lower temperatures and are a more comfortable alternative, directly heating the body's deeper tissue. Some added health benefits of infrared waves are that it targets the release of toxins in fat cells and has been shown to increase metabolism over regular use. In an infrared sauna, you receive all of the health benefits of high temperatures without exposing yourself to the extremely hot air of a steam sauna.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes! Our standard saunas can comfortably accomodate two people seated side by side and our large sauna can accommodate three people. There is a $25 charge per session for each additional person.
What should I wear?
All of our treatment rooms are private so you are welcome to wear what you feel most comfortable in, a bathing suit or nothing at all. Please ensure you sit on one of the towels provided during your sweat.
How are the saunas cleaned?
We use a tea tree oil based cleaner to thoroughly wipe down all sauna surfaces between each client. The saunas are made with Canadian cedar wood, which is also a natural antibacterial. Infrared lighting and the high sauna temperature are also natural disinfectants.
How often should I use the infrared sauna?
It depends on your health goals and any conditions you may be treating as to how often you should sauna. We recommend a minimum of once a week for maintenance and two or three times a week if you have a more specific health goal. You can sauna daily if you wish. You can build it into your routine like you would exercise. If you are using the infrared sauna for different health protocols (e.g. a cleanse or detoxification program), it may help to sauna more frequently. Please be sure to talk to your medical practitioner should you have specific health concerns.
Who should take care using an infrared sauna?
Seek permission from your doctor prior to use for the following conditions: - Taking Medications - Under 12 years old - The Elderly - Cardiovascular Conditions - Chronic Conditions Infrared sauna use is contraindicated for people with following conditions: - Pregnancy - Hemophilia - Fever - Insensitivity to Heat - Alcohol / Alcohol Abuse
What is the difference between infrared saunas and PBM light therapy?
Light exists in various wavelengths, with visible light ranging from 400 to 750 nanometers (nm). For example, blue light has a wavelength of 460nm, while red light is at 660nm. Infrared light spans from 750nm to 1,000,000nm, making up a considerable portion of the light spectrum. Red light therapy emits light at specific wavelengths, such as 660nm and 850nm, with the majority of light output concentrated around these values. In contrast, infrared saunas emit a wide range of infrared light wavelengths, from 1,000nm to 1,000,000nm, encompassing near, middle, and far-infrared light in full-spectrum saunas. The key takeaway is that red light therapy utilises select wavelengths, while infrared saunas employ a broader infrared spectrum. Wavelengths above 1,000nm generate heat, which explains why red light therapy produces minimal heat and infrared saunas' primary application is the production of heat.
What is chromotherapy?
Chromotherapy or colour light therapy is a method of treatment that uses the visible wavelengths of the colour light spectrum to treat the mind and body. There is growing evidence that Chromotherapy can play a pivotal role in the treatment of reducing stress and anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders or imbalances. Colour light therapy relies on the premise that each colour is associated with a different bodily response.
What is the difference between concessions and memberships?
- Concessions come in packs of 5, 10 or 20 sessions are a great option if you want to save money and need flexibility with how often you use the treatments. They have fixed expiry dates of 3, 6 and 12 months respectively.
- Memberships are our most cost effective option but require a minimum 3 month commitment to come every week. If you are working on a specific health goal, memberships are recommended.
Can I bring my child/teenager to Hana for a sauna?
We have a minimum age requirement of 16 to be able to use our sauna rooms. However, we accept 12 to 15 year olds attending a session with a parent or guardian with the understanding that the parent or guardian is responsible for ensuring the child is supervised at all times, and is not in the sauna for longer than they can comfortably handle. For children under the age of 12, they must be supervised by a parent or guardian AND have a referral from their health practitioner.
Can I bring my child to Hana to hang out?
We consider Hana to be a child-free space, to allow our clients the opportunity to fully disconnect. We understand that child care arrangements can be difficult at times, but we appreciate that you consider our other clients during these circumstances, and do not bring your children to Hana.
