Frequently asked questions

Can deep tissue massage help with injuries or recovery?

Deep tissue will help with recovery, particularly for sports injuries, muscle strains, or scar tissue breakdown - but only after the acute phase has passed. Consult your healthcare practitioner before massage, if you are recovering from injury.

If you’re ever unsure, feel free to reach out to us before booking.

How is deep tissue massage different to sports massage?

Both massages involve deep pressure and focus on relieving muscle tension, however target different results:

Deep tissue massage is more general and aimed at releasing chronic muscle tension and addressing posture or stress-related muscle issues. For example, deep tissue can be quite beneficial on back and shoulders, if you are typically hunched over a computer during your work day. It’s not necessarily sport-specific and may not follow the same targeted techniques used in sports massage.

Sports massage is tailored to athletes and active individuals. It targets muscles used in specific sports or exercise. It can be scheduled before, during, or after performance to enhance recovery, prevent injury, and improve flexibility. It’s less likely to obtain a “one-off” sports massage, but rather implement a recovery plan.

How often should I have a deep tissue massage?

This depends on your goals:

For chronic pain and tension: weekly or fortnightly

For maintenance: every 3 to 4 weeks

For athletes or physically active individuals: more frequent sessions are recommendedappointment.

Will deep tissue massage hurt?

Deep tissue massage can feel discomforting at times, particularly when targeting tense areas such as muscle knots. However it should never feel like sharp, unbearable pain. Please communicate with your massage therapist if the pressure is too much.

Will I be sore after a deep tissue massage?

It’s common to feel sore for a day or two, similar to post-workout soreness. This is due to the deep muscle manipulation. Drinking water, gentle stretching, and infrared sauna or PBM red light therapy can help reduce soreness.

Is deep tissue safe for everyone?

Deep tissue is not recommended for people with:

  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Certain heart conditions
  • Recent surgeries or injuries
  • Fragile or broken skin
