What to expect

Once you enter our space, you will be offered a glass of filtered water and taken through to our PBM light therapy room.

Our lovely team will explain how to use the full body pod. We have a range of meditations available for you to listen to through the headphones that are available.

The treatment is 20 minutes long and over that time, you will feel increasingly relaxed. After your session finishes, the pod will automatically switch off.

We welcome you to enjoy a cup of complimentary herbal tea in our lounge before you reenter your day.

What is Photobiomodulation (PBM) light therapy?

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is also known as red light therapy or low level laser therapy, and is a treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to help the body heal.

How does PBM light therapy work?

Red and infrared light help our mighty mitochondria function better. Better functioning mitochondria mean more energy and less risk for disease.

The skin is the organ that is naturally exposed to light more than any other organ. Red and near Infrared are the only wavelengths that penetrate through the skin. The photons are absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores in skin cells. Consequently, electron transport, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) nitric oxide release, blood flow, reactive oxygen species increase and diverse signalling pathways get activated. Stem cells can also be activated allowing increased tissue repair and healing.

How often should I use the light pod?

This depends on the condition you are treating and the motivations for use (i.e. wellness, particular complaints). For most conditions, daily to every-other-day use of the pod for at least two weeks is recommended, followed by a once- or twice- weekly maintenance regimen.

How long until I see an improvement?

PBM light therapy will work for the minimisation of scarring, inflammation, fine lines, and many skin conditions in most people. The amount of time that it takes for a visible difference to occur will vary from one person to the next, depending on individual health factors including the type of skin condition to be corrected and its severity, hydration state, general inflammatory status, etc. Results will usually start to be seen in anywhere from 24 hours to 2 months of proper use, or under 20 minutes for pain relief with infrared and red light.

Does the PBM light pod heat the body?

The light pod warms the body slightly but does not produce heat like a sauna does. There is no need to shower after your session.

Why can't I see the infrared lights?

Because the infrared wavelength spectrum is outside what can be picked up by the human eye we are unable to see them. You can check they are working by viewing the pad through a camera lens. If the red lights are visible the infrareds are working!

What is the difference between infrared saunas & PBM light therapy?

Light exists in various wavelengths, with visible light ranging from 400 to 750 nanometers (nm). For example, blue light has a wavelength of 460nm, while red light is at 660nm. Infrared light spans from 750nm to 1,000,000nm, making up a considerable portion of the light spectrum. Red light therapy emits light at specific wavelengths, such as 660nm and 850nm, with the majority of light output concentrated around these values. In contrast, infrared saunas emit a wide range of infrared light wavelengths, from 1,000nm to 1,000,000nm, encompassing near, middle, and far-infrared light in full-spectrum saunas. The key takeaway is that red light therapy utilises select wavelengths, while infrared saunas employ a broader infrared spectrum. Wavelengths above 1,000nm generate heat, which explains why red light therapy produces minimal heat and infrared saunas' primary application is the production of heat.

Can I get too much PBM light therapy?

Yes. Using PBM light therapy for too long can reduce the effectiveness of your treatments. Red and near infrared light therapy has a “sweet spot” where the light is most effective. That is why our sessions are limited to 20 minutes.

Are there any instances where I shouldn't use PBM light therapy?

Yes. As the effect of light therapy on an unborn baby has not been researched it is not recommended to use the device over a pregnant area until further research has been done. 
It is not recommended to use the devices over heavy bleeding. Using light therapy over cancerous tumours and hyperactive thyroid glands should be discussed with your doctor prior to use.

Can I bring my child to Hana?

We have a minimum age requirement of 16 to be able to use our treatment rooms. However, we accept bookings for people under this age, if they have a referral note from their health practitioner. We consider Hana to be a child-free space, to allow our clients the opportunity to fully disconnect. We understand that child care arrangements can be difficult at times, but we appreciate that you consider our other clients during these circumstances, and do not bring your children to Hana.
