Frequently asked questions

What is the main purpose of sports massage?

Sports massage is designed to enhance athletic performance, prevent sports-related injuries, and promote faster recovery. It is tailored to the physical demands of sports and active lifestyles.

How is sports massage different from deep tissue massage?

Both massages involve deep pressure and focus on relieving muscle tension, however target different results:

Sports massage is tailored to athletes and active individuals. It targets muscles used in specific sports or exercise. It can be scheduled before, during, or after performance to enhance recovery, prevent injury, and improve flexibility. It’s less likely to obtain a “one-off” sports massage, but rather implement a recovery plan.

Deep tissue massage is more general and aimed at releasing chronic muscle tension and addressing posture or stress-related muscle issues. For example, deep tissue can be quite beneficial on back and shoulders, if you are typically hunched over a computer during your work day. It’s not necessarily sport-specific and may not follow the same targeted techniques used in sports massage.

Is sports massage only for athletes?

Sports massage is for anyone with an active lifestyle, and not only for athletes. Did you just do a great walk? A weekend of sailing? A workout at Reform Pilates? You will benefit from sports massage.

When should I get a sports massage?

  • Pre-event: To warm up muscles and improve performance
  • Post-event: To reduce soreness and aid recovery
  • During training: To prevent injuries and maintain flexibility
  • Rehabilitation: To assist recovery from soft tissue injuries, when recovering from injury please refer to your health practitioner prior to booking massage

Will sports massage hurt?

The massage therapist will use techniques that may feel intense, especially on tight or overworked muscles. However, there should not be unbearable or sharp pain. Please communicate with your massage therapist, and they will adjust pressure based on your needs.

How often should I get a sports massage?

This depends on your goals:

For chronic pain and tension: weekly or fortnightly

For maintenance: every 3 to 4 weeks

For athletes or physically active individuals: more frequent sessions are recommended

What areas of the body does sports massage treat?

  • Runners: legs, glutes, hips
  • Swimmers: shoulders, upper back
  • Lifters: arms, traps, lower back
  • General fitness: full-body or customised areas
