Contrast Therapy
What is Contrast Therapy?
Challenge your body and mind with contrast therapy at Hana and reap the many rewards of this treatment. The therapeutic application of hot and cold temperatures to the body has been used by ancient traditions to induce a healing effect. Our modern take on contrast therapy involves alternating between the heat of an infrared sauna and the cold from our ice bath.
As the body is heated, blood vessels at the surface dilate whereas the cold causes these same vessels to constrict. This alternates blood flow between the extremities and internal organs, helping to reduce inflammation and stimulate healing.
What are the benefits of Contrast Therapy?
- An improvement in post-workout muscle recovery and reduction in delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)
- Reduction in pain post-injury by affecting pain receptors and areas of the brain corresponding to pain, providing an anaesthetic effect.
- Detoxification as alternating temperatures create a pumping action to blood circulation and lymphatic vessels helping to flush out toxins
- The production of heat and cold shock proteins which repair damaged proteins, reduce free radical cellular damage and support the immune system
What does a Contrast Therapy session involve?
You have 60 minutes in the contrast therapy room and it is your choice how you spend the session, though there are a few recommended protocols available. The infrared sauna is heated up to 70 degrees Celsius and the ice bath is set at 6 degrees Celsius. Alternate between hot and cold therapy, showering after each sauna session. We provide cold filtered water and electrolytes, Baina organic cotton towels and Sansceuticals skin care.
