Ever wondered what fuels your sexual desire?

The latin root of the word libido means sexual lust. It's the driving force behind our fantasies and urges and a marker of our health and vitality.

But what happens when it takes a nosedive? Your body might be trying to tell you something's off balance.

The libido is a marker of our health and vitality. So when it plummets, our body is telling us that something is out of balance.

Some common causes of low libido include:

~ Chronic stress
~ Lack of time for self-care and connection
~ Hormonal imbalances (low testosterone in both women and men)
~ Nutrient deficiencies
~ Relationship struggles
~ Hormonal contraception
~ Perimenopause or menopause
~ Pregnancy and postpartum

Give your libido a boost naturally

  • Practice stress management - whether you choose to meditate, spend time in nature, or do some yoga. Find a practice that helps to ground and regulate your nervous system.

  • Prioritise rest, self-care and connection - fill your cup by doing something fun or creative that brings you joy. And take some time out to connect with yourself and your partner.

  • Avoid inflammatory and nutrient-deplete foods like processed food, refined sugar, refined grains and vegetable seed oils.

  • Ensure you’re getting enough protein at every meal to support the production of neurotransmitters like dopamine, implicated in libido.

  • Eat plenty of healthy fats like avocado, extra virgin olive oil, fatty fish and grass-fed butter and ghee to support healthy cholesterol levels, for the production of testosterone, oestrogen and other hormones that play a role in the libido.

  • Boost your zinc intake to support healthy testosterone production - including oysters and other shellfish, red meat, activated pumpkin seeds.

  • Get enough sunshine exposure to support vitamin D production.

  • Move your body in a way that is enjoyable - the blood pumping action of our heart and muscles contracting helps to oxygenate our tissues, which is associated with a higher sex drive.
