Self-care September: Why Self-care Matters

As we enter Self-Care September, a movement created by Embodyme, it's essential to understand why dedicating time to self-care is crucial, especially for women. Self-care is more than just a trending topic; it's a scientifically supported practice that is vital for maintaining mental, emotional, and physical well-being. However, research reveals that many women, particularly in New Zealand, are not prioritising their self-care, often neglecting their well-being due to various pressures and responsibilities.

The Alarming Reality: Women's Self-Care in New Zealand

Recent independent research conducted by Embodyme highlights a concerning trend: 85% of Kiwi women admit to neglecting or postponing their personal well-being. On average, women spend just 16 minutes a day on self-care—a startlingly low amount given the numerous demands placed on their time and energy. This lack of focus on self-care has significant implications for health, with 34% of women not getting enough sleep and nearly half unable to find time for personal well-being. Additionally, 71% of women report feeling guilt when they do prioritize self-care, with women feeling these emotions more frequently than men.

The Science Behind Self-Care

Scientific studies have long established the benefits of regular self-care practices. Engaging in activities like meditation, exercise, and relaxation techniques can significantly reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall health. Research shows that regular self-care can lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, thereby reducing the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease and depression. By dedicating more time to self-care, women can improve their resilience, emotional stability, and overall quality of life. Embodyme's goal with Self-Care September is to encourage women to reclaim their well-being by increasing their self-care time from 16 to 60 minutes a day.

Self-care is not a luxury—it's a necessity. This September, join us in embracing a new approach to self-care and make time for the activities that nurture your mind, body, and spirit.
